Overview

Pursuit Aerospace manufactures highly engineered aircraft engine components — including precision machined parts, forgings, castings, and complex assemblies — for commercial and military OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers, generating revenue through long-term supply contracts priced on a fee-for-service basis.

Executive Summary

Pursuit Aerospace is a textbook high-durability, moderate-opportunity asset in the Ciridae framework: the combination of safety-critical physical manufacturing, regulatory qualification moats, and per-part-number OEM lock-in creates a business that AI disruption cannot structurally threaten. The AI opportunity is real in quality inspection, process optimization, and engineering support, but is bounded by the physical production constraint — the business grows by adding machines and acquiring manufacturers, not by compressing cognitive labor. For CD&R, the AI story is operational excellence and margin improvement rather than transformative step-change, and the durability of the underlying economics is the primary investment thesis, not AI-driven upside.

Durability Rationale

Pursuit Aerospace sits in one of the most structurally protected positions in the industrial landscape: a certified, qualified manufacturer of safety-critical physical components embedded in multi-decade engine programs with regulatory-enforced switching costs. The company's role cannot be disintermediated by AI agents, its output cannot be substituted with a digital product, and the barriers to AI-native entry — capital intensity, NADCAP/FAA qualifications, 18-facility physical footprint — are among the highest in manufacturing. The primary durability risk is demand-side (a prolonged commercial aviation downturn or OEM in-sourcing trend), not AI disruption.

Opportunity Rationale

The AI opportunity for Pursuit is real but structurally capped by the physical nature of the business — most of the value creation happens on the shop floor, not in cognitive workflows that AI can compress. The most meaningful AI levers are in process optimization (AI-assisted CNC parameter tuning, vision-based inspection), supply chain planning, and engineering design acceleration, all of which offer genuine but incremental improvements rather than order-of-magnitude transformation. This is not a business where a PE sponsor needs to bring AI expertise to unlock step-change value — the cognitive labor pool is too small relative to the physical production function.

Key Risks

OEM in-sourcing or consolidation by a larger Tier 1 supplier could erode Pursuit's market position regardless of AI dynamics — the durability assessment assumes continuation of the outsourced supply chain model that major engine OEMs have historically favored.

If AI-enabled generative design and simulation tools dramatically shorten qualification timelines or allow OEMs to qualify new suppliers faster, the switching cost moat could weaken over a 10-15 year horizon — though this is a slow-moving risk and depends on regulatory bodies accepting AI-assisted qualification evidence.

EventDetails
Larson Forgings merged with Pursuit Aerospace.
June 17, 2025
Larson Forgings is a Chicago-based manufacturer of seamless rolled rings and open-die forgings for aircraft engines with a 130-year history. The merger brought additional scale and resources to Larson's customers and employees. Strategic rationale: To integrate a trusted supplier of mission-critical aerospace components into Pursuit's expanding portfolio. Mazzone & Associates acted as exclusive financial advisor to Larson Forgings.
Pursuit Aerospace acquired Aeromet International from Privet Capital.
2025
Aeromet International is a UK-based supplier of complex aluminum and magnesium castings for aerospace and defense. The acquisition expanded Pursuit's casting capabilities by adding light alloy investment and sand casting alongside existing super alloy investment casting. Strategic rationale: To broaden manufacturing capabilities and enhance product offerings in aerospace components. Lincoln International advised Privet Capital on the sale.
Golub Capital acted as Left Lead Arranger on a $635 million unitranche facility to finance the acquisitions of Whitcraft Group and Paradigm Precision by CD&R and Greenbriar Equity Group.
March 15, 2023
The financing included a $75 million revolving credit facility and a $560 million term loan. Golub Capital had a long-standing relationship with Whitcraft and supported multiple acquisitions and growth financings. Strategic rationale: To provide critical financing enabling the formation of Pursuit Aerospace.
Completion of acquisitions and combination of Whitcraft Group and Paradigm Precision by funds managed by Clayton, Dubilier & Rice (CD&R) and Greenbriar Equity Group to form Pursuit Aerospace.
February 15, 2023
Pursuit Aerospace was created as a new leading supplier in the aerospace industry, specializing in complex aircraft engine components. The combination created a scaled and diversified manufacturer with complementary capabilities across platforms, geographies, and skill sets. Strategic rationale: To leverage the strengths of Whitcraft and Paradigm to better serve OEM customers globally and pursue growth opportunities. Leadership: Doug Folsom appointed CEO; Ray Conner, former Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO, became Chairman of the board.
